One Fact, Many Views: How Perspective Shapes Reality

There is one fact. There is one view. And then there’s another. And another. In truth, there are many.

The fault lies not in seeing differently, but in believing our view is the only one.

Our biases quietly shape what we see. They tint our lens, colour our reality, and limit our understanding. But the moment we recognise this, we create space for perspective.

To see things in better light, we must first acknowledge that another light exists.

So, what are you looking at today?

More importantly—how are you looking at it?

Choosing Your Bench: How Perspective Shapes Action

“Where you stand depends on where you sit.” Nelson Mandela’s words ring true.

So, where do you sit? At the edge of a river, watching the water flow? On a mountain ledge, lost in its vastness? In a manicured park, or amidst the wild, untamed grass of a forest?

Do you sit in a glass cabin, looking down? Or among the people, standing up to plough, to sow, to build?

Often, where we sit is just about finding a bench. But maybe, we should choose our bench wisely—one that offers a view that fuels our passion.

Because when we stand, we work on what truly matters.

Walking into the Sun: The Shadows That Shape Us

When we walk facing the Sun, we cast shadows. They aren’t us, yet they exist because of us—formed by light falling on us.

On the ground, shadows are real, visible, exaggerated—a simple distortion of form. But the ones that fall in our minds? Those are far more dangerous.

In Jungian psychology, the shadow self represents the unconscious, darker side of personality—the fears, insecurities, and untold stories that shape how we see the world.

These inner shadows whisper narratives—about who we are, what we deserve, and what’s possible. And often, it’s those stories that define our future.

So, what shadows fall in your mind?

And more importantly—are they telling the truth?

After much is said and more is done, you hear an anecdote from the past. Fresh and sprightly.

That’s when it strikes you that even much is said and done, more remains unsaid. Tiny moments wrapped in raw emotion that will tower memory stacks. Ready to light up a dull day.

Even after people are gone, they stay. It is a story of how they loved and lived.

The trouble with grand moments in life is that they come unannounced. Just like that. Suddenly. Many a time you don’t even realise how grand a moment is until its passed.

That is perhaps one more reason why we ought to treat each moment as a precious moment. Each interaction as important and every minute with joyous energy.

While the most immediate arc is what is visible, every arc must be passed to cross the bridge. Viewed together, it’s a pretty picture.

Live it grand!

Its with a methodical ease that the old man spins the wheel. He is saying something that his faint breathing masks.

The Prayer wheel is exquisite to look at. To touch and spin around. The prayer wheel and the spinning of it reminds me of our lives. And how constant it has been through ages.
The prayer wheel and the old man’s chant seems to beseech me to slow down. They seem to ask me why I am in a hurry.
When was the last time you felt the need to slow down and soak in beauty around you?

If you havent felt so in a long while, perhaps you will soon. How about now?

The king stands like a true royal. Regal and lording over his troops. His troops , a tad too ready to take on a similar enemy. Flanked by the powerful and well armed. The battle will happen in the kings name. Under his watch.
When it’s all over, the King, the queen and their army will all fold into an ornate box that sits in patient wait for the battle to end. There are a few other boxes near the ornate box. Those hold other armies with their kings and queens, whose battles are done, and now awaiting a new hand to move them around. “Yea, it’s the same old chessboard”, says the shopkeeper to me. “ But you can play it in style” he shouts. Trying hard to be beat the din of the Cairo market.

That is an argument that takes me in. Yes, we might fight those battles day in and day out. But could we do it with some style? And style could come from grace. Perhaps elegance. A little bit of compassion. Hmm. Wonder what you think.

What battles are you fighting today?

There is a security guard, close to where I live. He smiles, waves and says a pleasant word. To everyone from the apartment complex who walks past his gate. It’s not ‘part of his job’. Yet, he does it with joy. It’s part of him.
He is a role model of sorts for me. For he stays generous with kindness and showers cheer with a garden hose, getting many mornings to bloom.
Random strangers and their acts of incredible kindness build pathways to the beautiful. Disconnected and unknown to each other perhaps. But not disjointed. Raw, uneven and rough. But, very real.
We miss seeing these and recognising these. Our perpetual quest for giant acts of kindness can blind us to grand moments that fill our daily lives. Staying alive to such makes it a grand life too.
Whatsay?

She is beautiful. With piercing blue eyes that are intense. I stand there, transfixed at her unbridled elegance and charm. Her wrinkles show up in large numbers when she smiles. She smiles often.
As the busy market in Cairo bustles by, she tells me her story. In broken English accented with an intact spirit.
Of sons, daughters and grand children. She has lead a very happy life, I can tell. She sells trinkets by the roadside.

As I prepare to leave, she takes a key chain from her beautiful collection and thrusts it into my pocket. “For you, my friend”, she says. With a charming smile and a bit of a wink adds, “ The friend who took the time to listen”. I couldn’t have stood there for more than 10 minutes, I think.

I insist on paying.
She insists on giving it to me for free. “Choose the right keys my friend”, she says and moves on.

People, their kindness and their wisdom is available to us always. Travel and discovery are good keys to open doors of the mind.
What roads are you on today?

Rural life teaches you things that urban life misses in its frenzy of reaching the next big thing, faster, better, cheaper.

Village life and its rhythms are so close to nature and its relatively predictable cadence. There is an acknowledgement of several aspects.
That it takes time to grow.
That it takes nurturing and caring to grow the farm

The belief in community.

That cheaper, faster, better is not always for the better.
Wish we pay more heed.
