Choosing Your Bench: How Perspective Shapes Action

“Where you stand depends on where you sit.” Nelson Mandela’s words ring true.

So, where do you sit? At the edge of a river, watching the water flow? On a mountain ledge, lost in its vastness? In a manicured park, or amidst the wild, untamed grass of a forest?

Do you sit in a glass cabin, looking down? Or among the people, standing up to plough, to sow, to build?

Often, where we sit is just about finding a bench. But maybe, we should choose our bench wisely—one that offers a view that fuels our passion.

Because when we stand, we work on what truly matters.

Pitching Tents and Choosing Views: A Lesson in Life

No walls, no ceilings—just a thin layer of fabric separating you from the stars. Want a better view? Just roll out.

As we camped in the mountains, one thing became clear—where you pitch your tent matters. The view, the experience, the journey—it all depends on where you choose to stop.

And isn’t that how life works?

We pitch our tents in different places. New places. Yet, no matter where we go, it’s always under the same vast blue sky.

Because in the end, the sky itself is our big blue tent.

Reflections can be pointed. The lake held a piece of wood that was enough of a perch for a bird!
We all have faces. This poem by Derek Walcott moves me beyond its words.

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

It’s all in the cloud. When swirls of white pop the sky, the lakes respond with love.
There is a magical dance with the wind singing a new tune and the clouds waltzing to it.
In the grand ballroom that the lake seems to host.

Rural life teaches you things that urban life misses in its frenzy of reaching the next big thing, faster, better, cheaper.

Village life and its rhythms are so close to nature and its relatively predictable cadence. There is an acknowledgement of several aspects.
That it takes time to grow.
That it takes nurturing and caring to grow the farm

The belief in community.

That cheaper, faster, better is not always for the better.
Wish we pay more heed.

There is character to much of Europe and its people. The open spaces define it.

It invites you to come in, stretch the muscle and the mind. Indulge in conversation. Catch up with a book. Sit back cuddling a coffee. Or watch people do all of the above and more.

Suddenly from nowhere, you realise the space has given a flight to your dreams. The asynchronous flutter of wings of pigeons announce lift off.
Suddenly much around you seems different.

Autumnal colours are a rich hue. A hue that is so rich that you wonder why death and withering has to be so colourful

And then you think that it perhaps is nature’s message to us. That it is all part of a large cycle!

“The Needles is a row of three distinctive stacks of chalk that rise out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight, UK, close to Alum Bay. The Needles Lighthouse stands at the outer” says Wikipedia.
What it doesn’t say despite trying hard to say it all, is that it is spectacular! Remember these are column of chalk in the sea!

Brussels at dawn. History and architecture wake up and say hello to the Sun.
The colours that populate the lens makes the eye squint. Three quarters in delight. And the balance at how little the lens can capture.

So I click a picture and switch off the equipment. Switching on the eyes and becoming present to the splendour of the morning.
