Arches, whorls, wood, stone all stand in attention as they house articles of interest to a teeming set of visitors. Signifying grandeur, victory, military might and a rich narrative that spans a few generations. “The preferred weekend residence of the Queen” I am told. Well, everybody has their own preferences! The Gribble bores into wood. With many legs and multiple teeth. So, in 2008 as part of the Yarmouth Pier Renovation project, (Yarmouth Pier is a wooden Pier, the longest in the British pIsles), they thought of the Gribble too. As an art installation.
So it sits there. Nothing more than a lump of concrete from behind. Showing its teeth and popping it’s eyes in the front . Its a seat, where you could go and sit atop it too. Perhaps in symbolic victory!
